Ishu Reading

Anyone who knew me growing up knew that I loved, loved, loved books! Some of my fondest memories are of my dad reading to me as a child; and also reading to myself. Ishu is finally at the age where we can sit for a story together. He can't read yet, but he does remember much of the stories and pictures, and can recite a few words or lines as I read.

He will ask me to read a book over and over while he works on memorizing the lines repeating the words as I say them. I'm not sure how much of the story he gets; but I so very much enjoy the oppurtunity to cuddle up with him on the couch and enjoy a good read.

One of his very favorite books is 'Put me in the zoo!' which was so generously given to him by my cousin Shivani when we visited them in New York when Ishu was just 10 months old. When I thumbed through the book, I thought that it was more for an older child, but Ishu and I read through it multiple times almost every day. Now that I've studied it in depth, I can see why it's a classic. It has really neat illustrations, and the pictures help Ishu remember the words! And, apparently, it's pretty tasty too.

I'm so grateful to Shivani for giving it to us-- it was ishu's first non-board book!

This is a video of Ishu reading to himself. He's reading Curious George and the Bunny; where in George lets a baby bunny out of it's house, and it runs of like a shot, and then George find him again. See if you can pick out some of the words!

  1. Its pretty neat that he seems to memorize words and pictures.

  2. I'm really surprised how we can finish sentences and remember what's coming next. We have to add a new book or two in our rotation every week to stay sane as we (mainly Palak) read these books over and over. Hopefully he will start reading it to Amaani when she is ready. And then we can just look at them and feel pround. :)

  3. i picked out monkey!

  4. Kartik, you are right! I can't wait until they can self-entertain!

Parag, good job! I love his almost understandable toddler speak.
